Street noise: how can you effectively soundproof your apartment and regain peace of mind?

Living in the city has many advantages: proximity to work, schools, services, and convenient access to public transport. However, there is also a downside — street noise, which can significantly reduce comfort and quality of life. Traffic, buses, trams, motorcycles, reversing signals, horns, and night deliveries mean that even in your own home, it can be difficult to find peace and restorative rest.

If outside noise is constantly audible in the living room or bedroom, it does not have to mean that “that is just the way it is.” In many cases, the problem can be realistically reduced. However, one thing must be clear: effective apartment soundproofing does not consist of randomly adding soft materials, but of identifying where the sound really enters the interior.

Where does street noise in an apartment come from?

Most often, the culprit is not the external wall itself, but the weakest element of the entire partition. In practice, this means that acoustic comfort is often determined not by thick walls, but by:

  • windows with too low acoustic insulation performance (especially the glass, which is the strongest insulating element, while the window loses the most at the frame and seals),

  • installation gaps around the joinery,

  • trickle vents,

  • external roller shutters and their boxes,

  • balcony doors,

  • connections between façade elements and the joinery.

Street noise does not stop at the interior aesthetics. It can penetrate through very small gaps and then be amplified by the room acoustics. That is why two apartments in the same building can produce completely different acoustic experiences.

Why is street noise so bothersome?

Road traffic noise is particularly burdensome because it is usually:

  • long-lasting and repetitive,

  • present from morning until late evening,

  • variable over time, which makes it harder to get used to,

  • composed of different frequency bands — from low rumbling to sharp sounds from tires, engines, and braking.

In practice, this means problems with concentration, sleep, rest, and privacy. Even if the noise does not seem very loud, its constant presence can cause fatigue and irritability.

Can an apartment be effectively soundproofed?

Yes, but the effectiveness depends on the cause of the problem. Sometimes improving one element is enough, and sometimes a comprehensive approach is needed. The most important thing is not to act “by intuition”.

In acoustics, a simple rule applies: first diagnose, then solve.

Without this, it is easy to incur a cost that does not bring real improvement. For example:
thick curtains may slightly reduce reverberation in the room, but they do not replace acoustically effective windows. Likewise, replacing the glass alone without analyzing the entire window and installation does not always solve the problem.

Where should apartment soundproofing start?

1. Checking windows and balcony doors

This is the most common place where street noise penetrates. What matters is not only the glazing unit itself, but the entire product: the profile, seals, closing mechanism, and installation.

Pay attention to:

  • the tightness of the sashes,

  • the condition of the seals,

  • the quality of the compression,

  • possible leakage around the reveals,

  • the presence of trickle vents,

  • the acoustic parameters of the entire window, not just the glass.

In many apartments the problem is also large glazing and balcony doors, which look modern visually but acoustically can be the weaker point of the partition. It is also worth remembering hygro-controlled trickle vents, which are often used in modern windows — although they provide proper ventilation, they may worsen acoustic insulation.

2. Assessing trickle vents and ventilation

A trickle vent may be necessary from a ventilation standpoint, but at the same time it may worsen protection against noise. In such cases, it cannot simply be “blocked,” because that would disrupt ventilation and may lead to moisture problems.

The solution is to analyze whether the installed elements are properly selected and whether there is an opportunity to improve their acoustic performance without reducing air exchange.

3. Verifying the installation of the joinery

Even a good window will not perform its function if it has been poorly installed. Perimeter gaps, errors in setting the frame, or improper sealing of the connection with the wall can significantly reduce the final result.

This is often where the source of disappointment after an expensive replacement lies.

4. Analyzing walls and related elements

Although windows are usually the main path for sound penetration, sometimes the problem also lies in:

  • lightweight built-in sections,

  • roller shutter boxes,

  • sills,

  • utility enclosures,

  • connections between the wall and the façade or slab.

In some cases, it is also necessary to assess whether phenomena inside the room are amplifying the subjective perception of noise.

What really works, and what only seems to?

Effective solutions:

  • replacing windows with products with appropriately selected acoustic parameters,

  • repairing or replacing leaky seals,

  • correcting installation errors,

  • sealing critical connections,

  • upgrading roller shutter boxes or trickle vents,

  • implementing additional solutions that increase the insulation of specific partitions.

Solutions with limited effect:

  • curtains and drapes alone,

  • random foams and “soundproofing mats” bought without analysis,

  • decorative panels installed only from the inside when the problem is leaky joinery,

  • replacing the glass without verifying the entire system.

This is important: acoustic adaptation of the interior and insulation from external noise are not the same thing. Soft materials inside the room improve the sound of the room, but they do not necessarily significantly reduce noise reaching from the street.

When is a professional acoustic diagnosis worthwhile?

If:

  • noise makes it difficult to sleep or work,

  • the apartment is located near a busy street, tram line, or intersection,

  • there is no expected improvement after window replacement,

  • you are planning a renovation and want to avoid costly mistakes,

  • the developer promised a certain standard, and the acoustic comfort is unsatisfactory, it is worth commissioning an acoustic assessment of the apartment.

A professional diagnosis allows you to determine:

  • which noise sources are dominant,

  • where the sound enters the interior,

  • which elements are the weakest link,

  • which solutions make technical and economic sense.

This way, instead of using trial and error, you receive specific recommendations.

Do windows always need to be replaced?

No. Sometimes the problem results from hardware adjustment, worn seals, installation gaps, or a specific building detail. However, it also happens that without replacing the joinery it is impossible to achieve the expected improvement. Additionally, it is worth paying attention to hygro-controlled trickle vents, which, although they improve ventilation, may have a negative impact on acoustic insulation. In such cases, it is worth considering their replacement or modernization.

Therefore, the key is to match the solution to the actual cause. In acoustics, there is no single universal “fix” that works for every apartment.

How to regain quiet and comfort in the apartment?

Effective soundproofing of an apartment from street noise requires looking at the problem holistically. It is not about adding “something,” but about removing or reducing the actual paths through which sound enters. A properly conducted analysis helps avoid misguided expenses and focus on actions that truly improve living comfort.

Silence should not be a luxury, but a daily standard. If street noise becomes a burden, it is worth treating it as a specific technical problem — because that is when it can be effectively solved.

Need to assess how to soundproof an apartment from the street?

If you are dealing with outside noise, it is worth starting with a professional diagnosis and selecting solutions tailored to the specific apartment. Well-planned actions make it possible to improve acoustic comfort without random and costly decisions.
