Silencing industrial machines is the art of enclosing noise in tight boxes. To evaluate how effective a given casing (box) is, we need to know how much it reduces the acoustic energy emitted by the device into the environment. This is what this specialized indicator is used for.

Professional Definition

Acoustic insulation power within the standard frequency range reduced to a single number value according to the method provided in PN-EN ISO 717-1.

This parameter specifically refers to acoustic power and not just pressure. This means it takes into account the total sound energy emitted by the source and retained by the enclosure. The “weighting” procedure (according to the PN-EN ISO 717-1 standard) allows for the correction of raw measurement data with the characteristic sensitivity of the human ear, giving engineers one, meaningful value (expressed in decibels) that represents the effectiveness of the enclosure under typical conditions.

Acoustics in Simple Words

Think of a loud blender. If you cover it with a thick wooden box, the noise becomes significantly lower. The weighted sound insulation index tells us exactly, how much “quieter” the machine operates after being placed in the enclosure. It’s like an energy label on a refrigerator, but concerning noise – one number tells us whether the enclosure is acoustically “tight” and retains a lot of energy (high index), or is just a thin wall through which noise easily penetrates.

Summary

This is a key parameter in designing sound-absorbing and insulating enclosures for the industry. It determines how effectively a given construction reduces the emission of acoustic power from the device into the environment, expressed as a single, easily comparable number.
